Any claim of a food shortage in America is an absolute LIE. I work in a food warehouse and right now the whole place is stacked to the rafters, every storage location full. It's the STORES that are not ordering enough of the food that is sitting in warehouses all across the country. That's NOT a shortage, that's the stores being greedy by playing on people's fears when they keep the shelves almost empty so you buy more out of panic.

You’re right; it wasn’t covid. It was unethical, ineffective and unjustifiable lockdowns imposed by governments. I knew this was a mistake the day they started announcing them. It’s not particularly fair to expect industry to have foreseen such and unprecedented global shutdown....regardless of how frustrating the continued excuses may seem.

Who on earth is downvoting this video! I think (it's not covid) is not entirely accurate because many of these problems happened due to shut down's related to covid. Our system was not built around the government shutting down production, because that hasn't happened in the past. Calling it Flawed implementation is, as said, an over simplification, when there has not been shut downs like this before. And in honesty, the companies that have had many months of stock on hand have now run to the end of that production as well. There has become an endless amount of bureaucracy, it is amazing products end up on doorsteps at all. Well, as extra supplies run out, we will see fewer items on doorsteps. Not sure about all the car companies, but I did visit a car manufacturer in Mexico, a few years back and they had the largest lot I could have imagined full of trucks and cars, seemed like a lot of inventory to me. So, it is not just Toyota.
ThomasFromTN

The rhetoric driving this presentation amounts to semantical gymnastical BS. Suggestion that COVID was not cause for shortages (an iceberg was not cause for the Titanic sinking) because logistical (and structural) deficiencies were intrinsic qualities embodied in the respective dependent variables (supply chain, Titanic) is endowing the term "cause" with improper semantical attributes in both such circumstances. It seems to me the fair analogy would be the absurd proposition that a person inflicting mortal harm on another person should never be prosecuted, for murder, as the "cause" of that other someone dying...because that other someone, being inherently mortal, was inevitably going to die, anyway.

I do this at home instinctively. I keep some stockpiles on hand of certain items that are hard to get (I have to order on line or travel miles to a store to acquire). That way I will not run out if my car breaks down, I get sick, or get too busy to get them. Other items that are easier to get (are readily avaiblle at the corner market) I do not bother to buy ahead. The big companies are run by people that are so far up in the clouds they cannot use common sense.

Lean bit them and I hope they learn from it. I knew from my own mfg experience that lean sabotages the chain because when everything is going well - it's great. But any problems and it is too fragile when taken to the extremes it is these days. Such an excellent video. Should be required viewing for any decision-maker related to mfg. What is there is a war? It's resilience vs. profit. Wrong blend = fail. Also, how about outsourcing? In 2005 most mfg of face masks followed trends to outsource to China. That went well (?).

You didn't mention that companies are taxed on inventory. Many years ago book publishers changed their model to avoid paying taxes on inventory. Teachers cannot expect that textbook to be available. Students need to assume they are reading online (renting books), or printing the book themselves. This shifts the cost of printing a $300 book to the student / consumer. Sticking it to the customer one more time.

Your story is good but claiming scarcity of Trucking company drivers is a loaded issue. Politics in California has created this debacle. Independent truck owners leased onto Intermodal companies is a real issue. Claiming misclassified and not paying drivers for the delays at the ports is a real problem. You have Federal, State, County and City ordinances all encroaching upon the port business.

So little of it means anything to ones personal happiness or physical survival, but it must be devastating to the tens of millions of people who don't see it that way. Oh, no! I can't buy a new trade in for a new rental car again, or a new PlayStation, or my bubble tea, It reeks of the same complaining done when people realized they couldn't get their hair cut, dyed, or their nails done. It really is nice to be on the very low end of the income spectrum. I needn't worry about being part of the long lines of people needing to upgrade to the latest and greatest when what they have works just fine. This too shall pass, as history has always demonstrated. If one must worry about anything, worry about the important things like clean air, clean food, adequate shelter, clothes to protect from the elements, and friends to pass the time with over a game of cards, now that we can do so. But being alone certainly has little to do with being lonely. I've been doing it for quite some time now, and it suits my nature fine. And as far as how the Japanese developed, adopted, and further new how to apply going with the flow with JIT manufacturing, well that is part of their cultural makeup. Which is partially why, when the west adopted it, they couldn't conceive of utilizing the more "fuzzy" aspects of JIT. Primarily, Western culture s more concerned about immediate and swift realization of desire. And that fundamental difference is precisely why it fell flat on its ass here. Our CEOs were as always more concerned about pleasing the shareholders at the expense of everything else. And I doubt many western companies attitudes will change all that fundamentally in the years to come. We suffer too much from the "me first" and "I deserve it, and I want it now", culture of the self to the extreme. And it may be a considerable part of our own decline. It certainly has contributed to it over the past five decades.

You are missing the most factual point, that is the elected officials imposed lockdowns. It's important to recognize and be aware that the lockdowns and like many other global restrictions, are made by current leaders and aspiring leaders cooperating for a faith based agenda. These leaders find an opportunity to impose restrictions on our liberties without remorse because they whole heartedly believe a few sacrifices on our end will eventually advance humanity to utopia. These agendas are faith based because they are based on failed or untested theories. They are faith based agendas because the people promoting them have zero experience in it. They are faith based agendas because they are based on emotions over science. I encourage you to make some time to begin your own search with the World Economic Forum.

It would seem like a simple solution is possible. Start with extreme just-in-time. Then every year you adjust the number of day's worth of excess stock you need at any given time by the number of days you experienced shortages that year. If one year has less days shortage, then keep the old value. If a year has more, than raise that as the new benchmark for that specific sourced item. That way you can be hyper-efficient in the beginning and gradually make your manufacturing logistics more robust. You might even want to adjust month to month, or even week to week in the very beginning.

So what I'm getting is that something like covid was inevitable and because it wasn't foreseen it wasn't prepared in the supply chain. It was still ultimately caused by covid. The good news is that now that it's happened we have to adapt and be ready the next time something like this happens. Also a couple years ago the ports shut down due to union workers on the docks going on strike. Food was rotting and a bunch of ships sat out at sea for weeks on end. I'm a diesel mechanic and we are having issues with parts being nationally back ordered so trucks sit for weeks sometimes for a small part. We'll get through this people but we gotta stop the fear mongering and get back to work.
